He stops to help her, and his decision unmakes his life. By the next morning, she is gone, and Mayhew discovers that, for all intents and purposes, so is he–his fiancée and coworkers don't recognize him and his apartment is rented to someone else. He is virtually invisible. Mayhew is now a resident of London Below, a murky realm of shadow and danger where the woman he helped, Door, is a person of great power and nobility. Pursued by the other worldly assassins who slaughtered her family, Door must discover who ordered their deaths before she meets the same fate.
